This issue of Melanoma Care Options: Dermatology Update, discusses the growing role of the dermatologist as the central coordinator in the prevention, detection, and treatment of melanoma. In this publication, based on a continuing medical education symposium held at the American Academy of Dermatology 2006 Summer Meeting in San Diego, on July 28, 2006, we present data and provide insights on preventive strategies, sentinel lymph node analysis, and adjuvant therapies, with a focus on the dermatologist's role in coordinating the care and education of patients with early melanoma. A case study of a representative patient is discussed throughout the program to illustrate the types of decision points faced in daily practice. We hope that you find this publication useful and stimulating and the information relevant as you face the challenges of caring for patients with melanoma.
